Kissing can transmit bacteria that cause tooth decay

Detail "The Kiss" A. Roding 1886La bacteria called Streptococcus mutants, can also be transmitted by sharing food using the same spoon or fork, said Rifkin, who works as a dentist in Beverly Hills.

The bacterium "Streptococcus mutants" is usually found in dental plaque of infected persons. A simple saliva test can detect the bacteria and determining whether the individual is at risk of developing cavities.

"The brushing, flossing and other oral hygiene are essential to reduce the amount of bacteria that attach to tooth surfaces," said Rifkin.

In addition, the dentist explained that patients may be applied fluoride in the office, and that fluoride helps the tooth surface becomes resistant to acid degradation and decay.

"Be alert when you pass your partner when you kiss food and because it can transmit the bacteria that cause cavities," said the dentist. Among individuals at greatest risk of dental caries are those who have had two cavities in one year, diabetics, hypertensive, those with lower saliva flow and those whose immune system is weak.
