Dentistry is the medical and surgical specialty which is responsible for diagnosis, treatment and prevention of diseases of the oral cavity (this includes the teeth, gums, tongue, palate, oral mucosa, salivary glands and other anatomical structures involved, as the lips, tonsils, oropharynx, and temporomandibular joint).

History of dentistry
The diseases have afflicted humanity since its very inception, particularly the sharp and lancinating toothache caused by a deep cavity or a periapical abscess. Curative and rehabilitative techniques have been practiced by many physicians throughout history. The earliest record that exists on early Egyptian practice of dentistry dates back to 5000 years ago (3000 years BC). Hessie-Re is considered the first known dentist in history. An Egyptian inscription shows Hessie wood-Re as head physician of the court. Later this profession was assumed by the barbers who in addition to the services of haircuts, dental extractions assumed the customer complaining of pain. Then they began to exercise flebotonianos and dental surgeons in different parts of the world as part of the authorizations given by the Spanish authorities of the time. Frenchman Pierre Fauchard is considered the father of modern dentistry, for his innovative contributions to the specialty.
